Learn how to make your own private copy of an app and choose which audience it runs on.

Overview

Duplicating an app gives you a copy that you own, so you can change it without touching the original. The copy is a private draft that only you can see, and sharing does not carry over from the original. It is named "Copy of" followed by the original name.

Duplicate is available when your organization has it turned on. You can duplicate apps that run on an audience. Widgets cannot be duplicated, and neither can apps built on more than one audience.

When you duplicate an app, you choose what the copy runs on:

  • The original Audience (about a minute). The copy stays linked to the original audience, so it updates when the audience does.
  • Your own copy of that Audience (a few minutes). GTM One makes a copy of the original audience for you, and connects the app copy to it. You can change its filters and columns freely, and it stops following the original. This choice appears only when your organization has copying the audience turned on.
  • One of your Audiences (a few minutes). GTM One fits the app to an audience you pick and makes any adjustments, then opens the builder chat so you can review what changed.

Duplicate an app

  1. In the left navigation panel, click Apps.
  2. Point to the app's card, then click the three dots icon. In list view, the three dots icon is at the end of the row. You can also open the app and use its menu, or click More actions in the builder.
  3. Click Duplicate. If Duplicate is turned off, point to it to read why (see the list at the end of this article).
  4. If the Which version? question appears, select Last published version (the default) or Current version, including changes you haven't published. It appears only for the owner of an app that has unpublished changes.
  5. Under What should your copy run on?, select The original Audience, Your own copy of that Audience, or One of your Audiences.
  6. If you selected One of your Audiences, click Next. On Which Audience should your copy run on? (step 2 of 2), click Use beside the audience you want, then click Continue. A folder with several audiences opens a list to choose from. Only audiences of the same kind as the app's (accounts or contacts) are listed.
  7. Otherwise, click Duplicate.

GTM One shows the steps of setting up your copy (e.g., Copying the app..., Copying your Audience..., Preparing your Audience..., then Getting the builder ready...). When the copy is ready, it opens in the builder as a private draft, with the chat ready. When you chose a different audience or a copy of the audience, the chat starts with a summary of what changed.

You do not have to wait on this screen. Click Close and the copy keeps going. The copy shows in your apps with a Building badge, and when it is ready a message reads "Your copy of" followed by the app name and "is ready". Click Start editing in the message to open it. The message stays until you dismiss it.

If you cannot choose a different audience

If no audience of the right kind is available, the picker offers Use the original Audience instead and Create an Audience. The original Audience and Your own copy of that Audience are turned off when you do not have access to the app's audience. Point to either one to read why. Ask the audience's owner to share it with you, then try again.

When Duplicate is turned off

Point to Duplicate to read the reason. The reasons are:

  • "You need access to this app first". You do not have access to the app. Ask its owner to share it with you.
  • "Wait for the current build to finish, then duplicate." The app is still being built. Try again when the build finishes.
  • "Your copy of this app is still being made." A copy of this app is already in progress.
  • "This app has no published version to copy yet." Publish the app first, or ask its owner to.
  • "Only apps built on an Audience can be duplicated." The app is not built on an audience.
  • "Apps built on more than one Audience can't be duplicated yet."
  • "This app can't be duplicated yet because its Audience data isn't ready." Try again later.
  • "You need access to this app's Audience first". Ask the audience's owner to share it with you.
  • "Checking whether this app can be duplicated..." GTM One is still checking. Wait a moment.
  • "Couldn't check whether this app can be duplicated. Reload the page to try again." Reload the page.

If you see an error

  • "A build is running on this app. Try again once it finishes." Wait for the build to finish, then duplicate again.
  • "That Audience can't be used for this app. Pick one of the same kind." Choose an audience with the same kind of records as the app (accounts or contacts).
  • "You don't have access to that Audience anymore. Choose another option." Pick a different choice, or ask the audience's owner to share it with you again.
  • "Couldn't start copying the Audience. Try again in a minute." Wait a minute and duplicate again.
  • "Couldn't duplicate this app. Try again." Click Duplicate again.
  • "Couldn't make your copy". The copy was started but could not be finished. The message under it says why, and the app is not added to your apps. Close the dialog and duplicate the app again.
  • "Couldn't make your copy. Duplicate the app again to retry." Duplicate the app again.
  • "Couldn't copy the original Audience. Duplicate the app again to retry." Duplicate the app again.
  • "This copy needs changes to fit that Audience, and the builder agent isn't available right now. Try again later." Duplicate again later.
  • "Making your copy was interrupted. Duplicate the app again to retry." Duplicate the app again.
  • "That Audience doesn't have every column this app reads. Duplicate it again and choose one of your Audiences, and the agent will help you adjust it." Choose One of your Audiences so GTM One can adjust the app for you.
  • "Couldn't load the Audience's data for your copy. Try again in a few minutes." Wait a few minutes and duplicate again.
  • "Making your copy took too long. Duplicate the app again to retry." Duplicate the app again.
  • "Couldn't check on your copy. If it finishes, it shows up in your apps." GTM One lost track of the copy. Check your apps in a few minutes before you try again.
