Overview
Apps run on an audience, so deleting an audience, or a column in it, can break apps built on it. When you delete either, GTM One checks what is built on the audience and shows you before you confirm. You can also tell the owners of the other apps so they are not surprised.
Delete an audience
- In the left navigation panel, click Audiences.
- Open the actions menu for the audience and click Delete Audience. When the audience shares its folder with other audiences, you can also delete it from its tab in the audience builder: open the tab's menu and click Delete.
- In the Delete Audience dialog, read what is built on the audience. Your own apps are listed under "Apps to delete with this Audience".
- Select the checkbox beside each of your apps you want to delete along with the audience. Each reads "Delete permanently". Apps you leave unchecked remain, but stop functioning without the audience.
- To tell the owners of other people's apps, select Notify affected people. The box reads Notify other owner or Notify other owners when it is for other people's apps.
- Under "Type the Audience name to confirm", type the audience's name.
- Click Delete Audience.
Deleting is permanent. Any app built on the audience stops working immediately and must be rebuilt against a new data source. If you do not own the audience, the dialog tells you "Apps built by other people also depend on this Audience." without saying how many.
When you notify the owners, each receives an email, " deleted an Audience your app depends on", that names the audience and links to their app or apps. An email that covers several apps lists up to five and then shows "and" a count.
If nobody else has apps on the audience, the checkbox is replaced by a note: "No one else has apps built on this Audience, so no notifications will be sent." If the other apps have no individual owner, the note reads "The other apps built on this Audience have no individual owner, so no notifications will be sent."
Delete a column
- Open the audience in the audience builder.
- Open the menu on the column's header and click Delete column.
- In the "Delete column?" dialog, read the warning. It says "This Audience has an app built on it" or "This Audience has apps built on it", and that GTM One cannot tell whether the column is one the apps use. If it is, the apps will need updating.
- To tell other app owners, select Notify other owners.
- Click Delete.
Owners you notify receive an email, "Your app may be affected by an Audience change", which says which column was removed and recommends reviewing the app. Your own apps are listed under "Your apps built on this Audience". There is no undo for a deleted column.
If you see an error
- "We couldn't check what's built on this Audience. Deleting it may break apps that depend on it, and no one will be told." The check failed. You can still delete, but no one is notified. Try again later if you want the check first.
- "We couldn't check what's built on this Audience. Deleting this column may break apps that depend on it, and no one will be told." The same, for a column.
- "The selected apps could not be deleted, so the Audience was left in place. Please try again." None of the apps you selected were deleted, so the audience stays. Try again.
- "These apps could not be deleted, so the Audience was left in place:" followed by app names. Those apps could not be deleted. Try again, or delete them from the Apps page first.
