Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between filing numbers and filing chains?

Each UCC transaction may have multiple filing numbers as it gets amended, continued, or terminated over time. The filing chain number groups all these related filings together. When analyzing data, always use unique filing chain numbers for counts to avoid duplicates, and use the most recent filing number for current status details.

What do the different filing statuses mean?

Filing statuses indicate the current state of the secured transaction: Active (current and enforceable), Lapsed (expired without continuation), Terminated (officially released), or Amended (modified terms). Check both filing status and lapse date to understand whether a financing relationship is still active.

How do I avoid counting duplicate filings in my analysis?

Always filter or aggregate by unique filing chain numbers, not filing numbers. Each chain represents one underlying transaction, while multiple filing numbers represent updates to that transaction. For transaction counts use COUNT(DISTINCT filing_chain_number). For current details, select the record with the most recent filing date within each chain.
